Despite the importance of Their Eyes Were Watching God for feminist writers and critics, many readers of the novel are troubled by the novel’s representations of violence against black women. One key example – when Tea Cake slaps Janie (ch. 17)- is staged at a strategic moment in a larger contest between Mrs. Turner and Tea Cake.

What is Mrs. Turner’s function in the novel, and why does Hurston introduce her when she does? What motivates Tea Cake’s brutality? How does Janie respond to it? Does the beating have long-term consequences for their relationship? Does this scene qualify Janie’s initial belief that Tea Cake is “a glance from God” (102)?
